Unfortunately, COVID-19 seems to have caused an uptick in divorces. According to an article by the New York Post, “The number of people looking for divorces was 34 percent higher from March [2020] through June compared to 2019” (Rosner). While this is upsetting news, it’s not surprising. Believe it or not, even celebrities are buckling under the pressure of the pandemic. Tracy Morgan, Dr. Dre, and Kelly Clarkson have all filed for divorce during quarantine – and that’s just naming a few! Most recently, Cardi B and her husband Offset announced their divorce as well. However, Cardi, like many celebrities, insists on keeping her divorce amicable. In fact, when it comes to amicable divorce, it seems there’s a lot we can learn from celebrities!
What Constitutes an Amicable Divorce?
An amicable divorce looks different for everyone. In fact, even a contested divorce could be amicable. Generally, most couples consider amicable divorces ones without animosity. For example, if a divorcing couple can sit together and discuss their opinions on issues such as child support and visitation without placing blame or raising their voices, their separation is likely an amicable one.
Additionally, individuals involved in an amicable divorce can usually compromise and negotiate on key issues. In fact, most of the time, amicable divorcees can write out a marital settlement agreement with a mediator or legal document assistant – or even on their own! Ultimately, amicable divorcees often share children and plan on co-parenting. As a result, these individuals put their differences aside to prioritize their children during the divorce process.
Celebrity Amicable Divorces We Can ALL Learn From
Cardi B and estranged husband Offset are currently dealing with all the drama you’d expect from divorcing A-list celebrities. Nevertheless, friends of Cardi have recently shut down claims that the rapper is fighting for physical custody of daughter Kulture. In fact, they claim that Cardi is looking for an amicable divorce from Offset, and planning to co-parent.
While the story is sure to change plenty of times, Cardi can look to many other celebrities’ amicable divorces for inspiration. In fact, these celebrity couples could teach us all a lesson on amicable divorces and co-parenting:
Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr are known as one of the most amicable divorced celebrity couples. Upon separating in 2013, the couple announced they would still be spending quality time together with their son. In fact, the LA Times quotes Bloom:
“We love each other. We’re a family. We’re going to be in each other’s lives for the rest of our lives. There’s no question, for the sake of our son and everything else, we’re going to support one another and love each other as parents to Flynn.”
While now remarried to singer-songwriter Matthew Koma, Hilary Duff has documented her amicable divorce from Mike Comrie on Instagram since 2015. In fact, just one month after announcing their separation, Duff posted a picture with Comrie and their son Luca on vacation together! Then, shortly following the birth of her daughter Banks, Duff and her children were spotted with Comrie at a local farmer’s market. You can find the sweet pictures here.
Even with their fair shares of ups and downs, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck are perhaps one of the most famous pairs of co-parents in Hollywood. Since divorcing in 2018, Garner and Affleck have been raising their three children together. In fact, they are often spotted on public outings as a family! However, it hasn’t come without hardships. For example, Garner supported Affleck through multiple rehabilitations and recoveries. Plus, when Affleck’s affair with the family nanny came to light, Garner sat down with the children and explained to them the intricacies of celebrity “scandal”s.
But as Garner told Vanity Fair in 2016:
“The main thing is these kids—and we’re completely in line with what we hope for them. Sure, I lost the dream of dancing with my husband at my daughter’s wedding. But you should see their faces when he walks through the door. And if you see your kids love someone so purely and wholly, then you’re going to be friends with that person.”
What Celebrities Can Teach Us About Amicable Divorce
We can’t always believe everything we read in the tabloids. Plus, some celebrity divorces are more than messy – they’re disasters! However, divorcing couples can draw inspiration from several famous couples who have navigated divorce amicably – especially for the benefit of their children.
Not to mention, amicable divorces are often less stressful and less expensive than contested ones. For instance, an amicable divorcing couple may be less likely to argue over issues like visitation and child support. Instead, these individuals have an easier time reaching compromises they can form into marital settlement agreements. In fact, some divorces are so amicable that the parties don’t feel the need for defined support and visitation agreements. Of course, opting for a “looser” agreement has its own potential difficulties.
