Some Adoption Cases Cost More Than Others
As mentioned above, the cost to adopt a child will vary. Some types of adoption cost less than others. If you are adopting your own stepchild, who has been living with you for years, the cost to adopt a stepchild is less expensive than the cost to adopt a child from overseas. Inter-country adoption involves international travel, dealing with an adoption agency or orphanage in the child’s country of birth, and filing immigration documents, all of which cost money.
In general, higher adoption costs usually correlate with more people actively participating in the adoption process. Agency adoption, in which you adopt a child from the foster care system, involves many different expenses, great and small. It also requires you to work extensively with the California Department of Social Services. These are some of the costs to adopt a child in an agency adoption:
- Fees paid to CDSS or public adoption agency – up to $500
- Fingerprinting, medical examination, and court-filing – $100-$300
- Investigation of an independent adoption petition $1,500 – $4,500
Parents who adopt children through agency adoption are more likely to hire lawyers than families who do independent adoption. With this in mind, however, it is still possible to complete an independent adoption without hiring a lawyer.
